Bridging Indigenous Heritage and Digital Accessibility with TechDefined

Discover how Indigenous heritage, lived experience and cultural understanding influence TechDefined’s approach to digital accessibility, inclusion and practical improvement.

Heritage, Perspective and Digital Inclusion

A visit to Sri Lanka changed the way I thought about heritage, community and the mission behind TechDefined.

During the journey, I had the opportunity to spend time with members of the Vedda community, one of Sri Lanka’s Indigenous communities. Learning about their culture, traditions and relationship with the land reinforced the value of listening to different perspectives and understanding how people adapt to the environments around them.

That experience reminded me that technology should not be designed around only one type of user or one way of interacting with the world.

How Lived Experience Shapes My Work

I live with advanced keratoconus, a condition that affects the shape of the cornea and the way I see.

Standard glasses are not suitable for my vision needs, so I rely on specialised hard contact lenses to see more clearly.

Living with visual impairment has shaped how I approach daily life, work and technology. Tasks that may appear simple can require planning, adaptation and creative problem-solving.

These experiences have also helped me recognise how easily digital barriers can exclude people when websites and online services are not designed with different needs in mind.

Lessons From Indigenous Knowledge and Community

Spending time with the Vedda community highlighted the importance of resilience, resourcefulness and connection.

It also reinforced a broader lesson: meaningful solutions begin with understanding the people who will use them.

Cultural knowledge, lived experience and community perspectives can help organisations make more informed decisions about the services they create.

This principle also applies to digital accessibility. Effective accessibility work requires more than automated tools or technical checklists. It benefits from human insight, careful observation and an understanding of how different people interact with digital environments.

How This Perspective Connects to TechDefined

TechDefined is an independent Australian company focused on digital accessibility testing, reporting and improvement support.

Our work involves identifying accessibility barriers observed during testing within the agreed testing scope.

We provide clear findings, relevant WCAG references and practical recommendations to support more usable and inclusive digital experiences.

Where implementation work is included in the agreed scope, we can also assist organisations with addressing identified barriers and retesting relevant areas after updates have been completed.

Supporting Indigenous Organisations and Communities

Digital access can play an important role in education, healthcare, employment, business and community participation.

However, people in regional and remote communities may experience challenges relating to connectivity, access to suitable devices, digital skills and the usability of online services.

Indigenous businesses and organisations should be able to provide digital experiences that support their communities, customers and stakeholders.

TechDefined aims to support organisations in understanding the accessibility barriers affecting their websites and digital services.

This may include reviewing:

  • website navigation
  • forms and online applications
  • content structure
  • colour contrast
  • keyboard access
  • alternative text
  • compatibility with assistive technologies
  • important customer and community journeys

The exact pages, components and user journeys reviewed depend on the agreed testing scope.

Accessibility Is About Connection

Accessibility is not only a technical consideration.

It is also connected to participation, independence, dignity and the ability to access important information and services.

Understanding the barriers people experience—whether cultural, physical, situational or digital—can help organisations create more thoughtful digital environments.

My visit to the Vedda community reinforced the importance of listening, learning and recognising that every person’s experience matters.

Bringing Heritage, Experience and Technology Together

My heritage and lived experience influence how I approach accessibility and the work of TechDefined.

They remind me that inclusive technology should begin with people.

TechDefined’s role is not to claim that one assessment can make a digital service accessible to every user. Instead, we focus on carefully testing agreed areas, documenting the barriers observed and providing practical recommendations to support improvement.

By bringing together cultural understanding, lived experience and technical knowledge, we hope to support digital services that are more usable, respectful and inclusive.

Final Thoughts

Digital inclusion requires ongoing attention.

Organisations can begin by understanding who uses their services, which barriers may be present and what practical improvements can be made.

TechDefined supports businesses, educational institutions and other organisations through accessibility testing, reporting, implementation support and retesting within the agreed scope.

Better digital experiences begin by listening to different perspectives and designing with a wider range of people in mind.
